II. Multi-user-text-environments:
MUTE, for short. Hrielith takes place in such an environment. It creates an illusory world out of text, in which humans like us can play out our fantasies, experience terror, joy, frustration, heroism, and many other things our societies tend to frown upon with great liberty, and aye, even support from people like ourselves.
We do this in a few ways:
We interact with objects
(move them, manipulate them, create them, win them, etc)
We interact with creatures
(hunt, talk, examine, buy things from, attack, get attacked by, etc)
We interact with other players
(talk, emote, enjoy activities together, wish they'd go away, etc)In our MUTE, there are a few useful ideas about the 'things' that you will see, become, and encounter:
Rooms: A unit of 'space' in which events occur and are experienced. - The virtual landscape in which the story takes place -What you see when you type 'Look' or 'L' -'That place you can never find your way back to.' -Filled with people, exits, objects, creatures - sometimes things what eat you.
Objects: Myriad types of 'things' that may aid or hinder your path. - You may need to move to look (object) or examine (object). -Weapons, artifacts, wands, scrolls, texts - go ahead, get materialistic! -Containers such as chests and 'bags' - an important player-aid - customizable, for an imaginary fee.
Creatures: The living things of the world, often troublesome, but hey - what can you do? -Creatures of many and myriad races which interact -Intelligent creatures that talk interactively -Things what hunt you, and remember you, when you're asleep -Shapechangers that throw you off guard.
Players: The people like us who play and work here. Mostly certifiable. -The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - and er well, more than you can imagine. -Do stuff with each other - hunt together, form clans, guilds - build community. -Don't do stuff with each other - and die a lot! -Hey, where did the healer go? -Different 'types' of players with different skill sets -Different 'races' of players, with different attitudes.
The 'game' as it were, consists of the natural, crazed, boring and heroic interactions of these objects (and the people behind them) in a mathematically specified and somewhat randomized environment. We provide the environment, you provide time, imagination, and good typing skills - which tend to come along rather quickly when icky things are chasing you around in a text-based world - whilst you and your friends quest for glory, renown, and best of all - the really neat castles with those gnomey things in front.
Interactions are accomplished by sending commands to the game, by typing them (as text) in whatever client you are using - telnet, or a mud client such as zmud, rapscallion, or whathaveyou. For example, if your name is Tammith, they command exa tammith will allow you to see yourself.
The first player to successfully connect and play regularly with a palm pilot will be awarded something virtual that they won't soon forget.
The server interprets and resolves these commands, resulting in - you guessed it - textual interaction. Others nearby see what you say or do (emote), as you experience what they manifest. Sometimes, it's more fun than anything else. Sometimes, you just wish they'd go away. Welcome to interactive text environments! Some special things about Hrielith:
It isn't for everyone. We are an FRP MUTE with a few standards:
We are supportive
- we realize that the community is ourmost valuable resource.In-depth roleplaying
- we're a MUTE for role-players (hack and slash elsewhere)Semi-restricted playerkilling
- (there are rules, and consequences)Small world, small playerbase
- we're selective about players and admins. Quality, not quantity. We're literate, and we're a MUTE for literate people.
We expect people to take time to read documentation, and understand our policies.
We continue to evolve.
