XV. Arriving in the Game:
There's but one reason that I sought the portal, and I'd seek it again a thousand times. That reason was Glorthek. Everyone knows what happens if you get a red spot with his mark upon it - the next day is your last. When I saw it on my door, I knew immediately what I would do. I got there a few minutes before sunrise. There was definitely no other choice - and no time to make one. I admit that I worry he'll figure out where I went, and send people after me...but at least here I'll have a chance... -Overheard in the Portal of Welcome.
Hrielith is complex and should contain enough mystery and novelty to keep you interested for months, and possibly years. Part of that mystery and novelty is brought by the players. Part of it exists as stories, myths, records, and other explorable errata associated with the game. It's important that players familiarize themselves with local history, race knowledge, etc - at least to a moderate degree - before entering Hrielith.
When you arrive, take time to orient yourself, read the welcome message, acquaint yourself with common commands and feel free to shout for any sort of aid or assistance.
A small amount of coin in the form of a gem is provided in the Portal
of welcome; use it to purchase gear and supplies.
You'll find healing potions in the Sanctuary,NW of the fountain.
Armor in the bazaar, W. Weapons in Rennith's SW, Town Hall, N,
Bank, NE and an Herbalist E - who can prepare herbs you may
find for you.Hrielith is not like other similar places you may have experienced. Do not let your ideas about what is possible color your activities too much. Instead, allow your imagination to begin to find freedom in the world that you land in - and you will see for yourself that it is a lovingly handcrafted environment.
Rooms in Hrielith generally have 5 spaces, longitudinally.
Most of the time, you arrive in a room in the middle, or at Zero (0). The spaces are numbered, back to front, thus: -2 (back) -1 (rear) 0 (middle) 1 (forward) 2 (front). Thus, if you were at 0 or the middle, and wanted to get an object at 1, you would move one space forward (mv f). In combat, to strike at something not in your space, requires a missile weapon, or a spell. Many commands such as peo, obj and crea(tures) show position at the far left as a number, such as -1, etc. Familiarize yourself with in-room movement, it is an important aspect of gameplay.
Take some time to play with the helpbaseSome commonly useful commands:

obj - shows object position in room
crea - shows creature position in room
mv f or mv b - move forward or back a few steps in a room
spr f or spr b - as above, but farther. Here are some plot fundamentals:
The world of Eamai has three main continents, populated by a variety of enclaves of a wide variety of races. From single dwellings to vast metropolii.Elorn is a magical island on Eamai, where many of the first homes of extant races still exist. Elorn exists in a warped space, such that, while it is physically located somewhere on Eamai - no one knows where, travel to or from the island can only be accomplished by the use of an ancient magical portal, in the city of Hrielith. During a time of strife, the portal was damaged, and now functions only in one direction - to Hrielith. Those who come know they will never return to the mainland, or at least that it is extremely unlikely.
Hrielith is an ancient abandoned city - recently re-populated to attempt to deal with a terrible threat that lies beyond the Dwarven Firsthome at Laer'Keph pass in the east. Originally, it was populated militarily, by allied bands from different races and cultures who came to answer the call for aid that came to the mainland through the portal in the form of a party of elves and dwarves, when the portal was still bi-directional. When the portal was damaged by a mad Theurge, those who were on the island were trapped - in a sense.
Currently, Hrielith is inhabited by the descendants of those initial settlers, as well as those who have come to the island since then - a one-way trip - seeking fame, knowledge, fortune or dreams.
Now, what was it that brought you here, traveler?
